Miss America Reality Check Begins Jan 4th on TLC Print E-mail
Miss America Reality Check

Miss Massachusetts Valerie Amaral reports there were no ugly beauty-queen catfights when the upcoming 52 Miss America contestants lived with - and competed against - each other on TLC’s “Miss America: Reality Check.”

“There were 52 girls in one house with seven bathrooms,” said the Achusnet homegal. “Only five of them had showers and there were zero arguments.”

“Miss America: Reality Check,” hosted by Michael Urie of “Ugly Betty” fame, threw 52 pageant princesses together under one roof at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley, Calif., for 10 days. The gals were broken up into teams to compete in challenges related to the Miss America program (i.e., hair, makeup and fashion).

“There are some great twists to them,” she said. “In one challenge we have to wear helmets. It’ll be fun to tune in to watch and see us jump through hoops.”

The show will air on four consecutive Fridays beginning Jan. 4th leading up to the Miss America pageant on Jan. 26th.

“I think what makes the show interesting is that it’s a cast of ‘reality show participants’ that didn’t sign up to be in a reality TV show,” said Amaral, a senior at UMass-Dartmouth. “A lot of times when you have shows like ‘Survivor,’ it’s filled with people who wanted to be on a reality TV show. I think those people tend to be more exhibitionists. I think our show is going to be more genuine.”

“Reality Check,” however isn’t Valerie’s first reality TV experience. She appeared on MTV’s “Made” last year as a pageant coach for a Connecticut teen.
